How did HIV/AIDS become such a big stigma in our society? As far as I see it, it's just a disease.
What do you think? Have you or anyone you know had any experiences with this stigma?
Well, I think maybe it is because it spreads by sexual intercourse. People only concentrate on that and that's why it became a taboo.
And it may also be because AIDS was deadly and with no cure in sight when it was first introduced to the world. It caused a major fear among people.
I think it stems from the half-knowledge that people have about the disease. You hear someone has AIDS, immediately your mind makes this assumption that the person is just having sex left and right, which is in itself a big taboo in our country.
Agree that misconception or little knowledge about it is the main cause. Also it is related to sex which is a taboo makes it worst. There is a difference between HIV and AIDS but not many people know. Also HIV can be contracted by other means such as blood transfusion or syringes(not sterilised) or drug needles or accidental contact with HIV infected blood. But again these reasons are not commonly known.
The ads for condom don't stress enough precaution against contracting STD. The ads are mostly erotic or humor. With out of marriage sex becoming common definitely there is a need for more education.
